About TurkiyeNames
About TurkiyeNames
We document the names used in Türkiye in Turkish and English, bringing their meanings, histories and official statistics into clear, accessible explanations.
We are TurkiyeNames, an independent reference team documenting 11,136 names. Our aim is to help parents choose with an understanding of a name’s meaning, and help any reader explore names used in Türkiye with reliable context.
What is TurkiyeNames, and who is it for?
Choosing a baby name often starts with its sound and leads to questions about its meaning. You might also be researching your own name or one you encountered in a book. We bring those questions together in a bilingual reference for names used in Türkiye. Our mission combines careful documentation with understandable official figures. Explore all names, browse by meaning or by origin, or contact us at hello@turkiyenames.com.
What information can you find on TurkiyeNames?
Meanings and language origins
Explore meanings and etymology, with source language kept separate from religious association. A name’s Arabic origin and its appearance in a religious text are different facts, each requiring its own explanation.
Religious and historical context
Our Islamic names section covers Quranic words and names, prophets and Companions, with Arabic and Ottoman spellings. We also explain names associated with Turkic history, mythology and epics in their relevant contexts.
Official figures and rankings
Name pages present TÜİK figures through charts and a province map. Explore statistics, yearly rankings and provinces, with the period and geographical scope identified so comparisons have a clear basis.
Pronunciation and spelling
IPA transcriptions and audio help readers connect written names with their pronunciation. The pronunciation guide explains the notation, including sounds that may be unfamiliar to readers who do not speak Turkish.
Double names and notable namesakes
Double-name ideas help you consider combinations. Notable namesakes illustrate real-world usage; they are a selection of people, rather than a population dataset, and do not establish a name’s national popularity.
Surnames and free tools
Explore surnames, free tools and practical guides. Our girl names and boy names collections offer further starting points for browsing and building your own shortlist.

What principles guide our work?
- Origin and cultural labels describe names. They do not establish a person’s religion, sect, ethnicity, home region or character.
- We distinguish a word’s appearance in the Quran from its use as a given name and its language of origin.
- We explain uncertainty about meanings; when sources disagree, the etymology section says so.
- Official popularity figures come only from TÜİK, with the year and national or provincial scope clearly stated.
- Numerology is a belief, not an established fact. We exclude astrology, abjad fortune-telling and claims that names bring luck.
- English explanations include the linguistic and cultural context readers outside Türkiye may need.
How do we keep name information accurate?
-
Assess each kind of information separately
Meaning, etymology, historical usage and religious association answer different questions. Evidence for one does not automatically establish another. Where explanations differ, we keep the uncertainty visible.
-
Make statistics traceable
Official figures carry “Source: TÜİK,” the year, and Türkiye or the relevant province. TÜİK is the Turkish Statistical Institute. We distinguish names given to newborns from name frequency across the population.
-
Check proposed corrections against sources
We check each report against the entry and its sources before changing anything. Read our methodology and editorial policy for how we weigh evidence.
How can you suggest a name or report an error?
If you notice a problem with a meaning, spelling or pronunciation, report a correction. Include the page, the specific information you believe needs changing, and any supporting reference. You can also suggest a name that is missing, ideally with its spelling and an example of its use. For general questions, visit contact or write to hello@turkiyenames.com. These contributions help us identify gaps and make explanations clearer.
Frequently asked questions about TurkiyeNames
Is TurkiyeNames an official institution?
No. We are an independent reference site. TÜİK supplies the official name statistics we cite; citing those figures does not mean TurkiyeNames is affiliated with TÜİK.
Is every name’s meaning certain?
No. Some names have disputed origins or several proposed meanings. We explain uncertainty and, when sources disagree, describe the different explanations in the etymology section.
Can the site confirm whether a name can legally be registered?
Our explanations do not determine legal eligibility. For a name you intend to register in Türkiye, confirm the requirements for your circumstances with the nüfus müdürlüğü, or civil registry office, or a lawyer.
Do the Turkish and English versions contain equivalent information?
They aim to convey the same core information. English entries add context that readers outside Türkiye may need, using natural explanations rather than following the Turkish wording sentence by sentence.
