Clear standards

Editorial policy

We explain given names used in Türkiye with attention to evidence, visible uncertainty and a clear distinction between a name’s history and a person’s identity.

Name meanings need evidence. We distinguish linguistic origins, cultural associations and usage, explain unresolved interpretations, and welcome corrections. A name never establishes its bearer’s beliefs, background or personality. Source details help readers understand the evidence behind each entry.

How do we assess name meanings?

  • Evidence before guesswork

We look for linguistic and historical support for meanings and origins. Similar spelling alone does not establish a connection. A word’s meaning and its use as a given name are separate questions.

  • Uncertainty stays visible

When explanations differ, we describe their uncertainty. Unsupported meanings are not presented as settled facts. When sources disagree, the etymology section explains the differences.

  • Folk explanations get context

We identify popular origin stories as folk etymologies where appropriate. Familiarity does not prove historical accuracy. Cultural associations can be worth explaining, but they are distinguished from an established linguistic meaning.

How do we explain the evidence?

  1. Source limitations

New entries and entries with insufficiently verified meanings carry this label. Publication does not mean checking is complete. Uncertain explanations are also marked within the entry.

  2. Supporting evidence

We compare explanations with supporting evidence and make any necessary changes. Information supported by sources can still be corrected when new evidence becomes available.

  3. Disputed

When credible explanations conflict or a significant objection remains unresolved, the etymology section says so. New evidence can reveal disagreements in existing entries. We compare the sources and explain any resulting changes.

What claims do we exclude?

  • Claims that names determine personality, destiny or luck; astrology and fortune-telling based on letter values.
  • Assumptions about a person’s religion, sect, ethnicity or region based on their name.
  • Invented popularity counts or rankings, including notable-person samples presented as national statistics.
  • Verbatim copies of other dictionaries, or speculative meanings presented without qualification.
  • Numerology presented as established fact. If discussed, it is identified as a belief.

How do corrections and independence work?

How can I report an error?

Use report a correction to identify the entry, explain the issue and share supporting evidence if available. We assess the information; a submission does not automatically lead to a change.

What happens after an error is confirmed?

We correct verified errors and record the date and reason for changes affecting meaning or origin. We update the explanation of the evidence. If the evidence remains inconclusive, the disagreement stays visible rather than being presented as resolved.

Can advertising influence an entry?

No. Advertising does not affect meanings, how we describe evidence, name ordering or correction decisions. Advertising spaces are distinguishable from dictionary content. Readers can raise questions about these standards through our contact page.
