Source and scope

Put Defne’s lead in its annual context
TÜİK’s Yalova province history records Zeynep as the leading girls’ baby name from 2018 through 2022. Asel leads in 2023 with 28 and in 2024 with 25, before Defne takes the lead in 2025. This shows a change among annual leaders; it does not reveal why families made their choices. Defne means “bay laurel, an aromatic evergreen tree,” while Asel means “honey, the sweet substance made by bees.” Explore names by meaning to compare those meanings independently of their ranking.
Distinguish similar-looking boys’ entries
According to TÜİK’s Yalova annual figures, Alparslan leads the boys’ baby-name list in 2021, 2022 and 2023; Aslan leads in 2024, and Alparslan returns in 2025. These are separate entries and their counts should remain separate. In the latest provincial list, Metehan follows Aslan with 22. Alparslan means “valiant, courageous lion,” and Metehan means “Mete Khan; Mete the ruler.” Both names have Turkish origins. The origin index provides a way to explore language labels without assigning an identity or personality to a bearer.
Find the right list for population frequency
For the most common names in Yalova, Turkey, consult the population entries. TÜİK’s 2025 Yalova figures list Fatma with 3,434, Ayşe with 2,936 and Zeynep with 2,428 among female names. Mehmet leads male names with 3,060, ahead of Mustafa with 2,835 and Ahmet with 2,564. These counts serve a different purpose from the baby rankings above. Read about Mehmet and Mustafa for their meanings, or use name statistics to keep population frequency and annual baby-name frequency clearly distinguished.
Useful checks for Yalova comparisons
- Keep Aslan and Alparslan as separate names throughout your comparison.
- Preserve the tie between Zeynep, Duru and Asya in the latest girls’ list.
- Do not turn the supplied counts into percentages without the relevant total.
- Keep Yılmaz, Demir and Aydın in the surname category when taking notes.
